New Conservative Party HQ to open in Leeds, the Unsung Success Story of the North

Leeds has officially been chosen as the new location to house the Conservative Campaign Headquarters (CCHQ) as we go into 2021, with staff also moving to the region to focus their attention on the blue wall seats. As Leeds voted heavily for Boris Johnson in the December 2019 election, it makes sense for the Conservatives to move towards the blue region and declare a “commitment to the blue wall seats” and provide the party with a base at the heart of the blue wall.

Although Leeds may seem a peculiar location for the new CCHQ to the public, experts are reportedly “not surprised” about the choice of venue, emphasising the city’s “strong economy, four universities, and great transport links”, with Leeds having the third busiest railway station outside of London.

Leeds has also been named as the “unsung success story of the North” in that the economy there has done relatively well compared to other cities in the North of England, having the third largest jobs total by local authority area in recent years, with 480,000 in employment and self-employment. Whilst Johnson and the Conservative party announced the transition of CCHQ last week, they also announced the party’s plans to create a “generation buy” – offering low deposit mortgages for first-time buyers in a “revolutionary move for young people”. There are reportedly plans to introduce and encourage long-term, fixed-rate mortgages with only 5% deposits for first-time buyers which would enable young people to land themselves on the property ladder sooner.
